Beloved husband of Margaret J. Vaught Potts
A precious one from us has gone. A voice we loved is still. A place is vacant in our home Which never can be filled. Nelson Potts Obituary, states: Nelson C. Potts was born near Terre Haute, Indiana March 13, 1838. Died Feb. 19 1897 aged 58-11-22. Sixth of a family of twelve children, two of whom died in infancy, the remaining ten lived to adult age. One sister and four brothers survive. He leaves a wife and nine children to morn his loss. When eighteen years of age he united with the M.E. Church. Enlisted in Co. H, 28th Illinois Volunteers, being the first of six brothers to take up arms in defense of his country’s flag. He served three years, then re-enlisted as a veteran and continued in the army until the close of the war. He was at Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth, Memphis, Ft. Donelson, Vicksburg, and a number of other engagements. He well won the eulogy pronounced by his captain that He was one of the bravest men he ever saw. Charter member of Lewis G. Baldwin Post No. 279 G.A.R. In usual health in the morning, he started on horse-back for the country, and soon afterward was found lying in the road with his neck broken. A very large number gathered at the residence to participate in the funeral services. The funeral was in charge of the Post, and his remains were laid to rest in the Fell Cemetary. And still the stately ships go on To their haven under the hill, But oh for the touch of a vanished hand Or for the sound of a voice that is stilled.
