Charles "Charlie" F. Potts was born July 10, 1832 in Ross County, Ohio. His parents were William Pearson and Dorcas C. Mitchell Potts. He lived in Rushville, Illinois and Keokuk, Iowa. On August 15, 1861, he enlisted in the Civil War and was mustered in on August 24, 1861 at Camp Butler, Illinois by Captain Pitcher. He was promoted to Sargent and discharged from Natchez, Mississippi on August 26, 1864. He was shot in the knee at Jackson, Mississippi on July 12, 1862 which left him with little use of it. He worked as a carpenter and farmer. He married Mary Elizabeth Foster Hatch in 1865 at Rochester, New York. By 1880, he and Mary had moved to Carroll, Iowa. They then moved to Nebraska and back to Des Moine, Iowa by 1909. On November 9, 1910 he was admitted to the Old Soldiers Home in Marshalltown due to bad health. Mary was also living there at the Old Soldiers Home. Charlie died November 27, 1910 in Marshalltown. He was buried November 29, 1910 at the Iowa Veteran's Home Cemetery. Charles was the oldest of ten children, he had seven brothers; William K., Wilson, Nelson C., James Franklin, Jeremiah Raney, Louis Henry and Theodore Ford; and two sisters, Julia Ann and Susan Catharine.
