Bio

Charles Richard Meuret May 14, 1916 – November 3, 2010 Longtime Mesa County resident Charles Richard Meuret died at Hospice Care Center after a short illness. He had been a popular resident at Larchwood Inns for the past two years. Charles was born to Thomas and Bridget (Boyle) Meuret in Burwell, Nebraska. He graduated from Burwell High School in 1935. Charles was a U.S. Army infantryman during World War II. A Purple Heart recipient, he landed on Omaha Beach with the 35th Infantry Division, 134 Infantry Regiment on July 5, 1944 and was wounded soon after in the Battle of the Hedgerows, near St. Lo, France. After recovering from his wound, he rejoined his regiment and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Charles served in five major campaigns and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. After the war he met Eunice Donner at a local rodeo near Burwell. They were married on September 3, 1946. The Meuret family moved to Palisade in April 1958 and lived there until 1990, when Charles and Eunice moved to Grand Junction. Charles was a salesman by profession, having sold stamps, life insurance, car insurance, vacuums, pots and pans, chalk statues, and Christmas trees, to name a few. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and family picnics. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Meuret; sisters: Mary Hovorka, Loretta Horwart, and twin sister, Ellen Darrah. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eunice; brother, Thomas Meuret; sister, Cecelia Kaiser; sons: Gale Meuret, Glen Meuret and Wayne Meuret; daughters: Nancy Meuret, Rebecca Walker, Betty Brown, Rita Moss and Jane Meuret-Burr; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 7, 2010 from 4 -7:00 p.m. at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary. The funeral mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 790 - 26 1/2 Rd., on November 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow in Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado at 1:00 p.m. Callahan-Edfast Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.
