On Oct. 31, 2010, our heavenly Father welcomed our dearly beloved mom, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother Nola Mae Steen. She was 89 years of age. Nola was born on Sept. 13, 1921, to Isom and Katie Hogan in Mena, Ark. In addition to her parents, Nola had a sister, Fern, and together they attended Acorn High School. While at Acorn High, Nola was a very accomplished basketball player and helped lead her team to championship playoffs, as well as being senior class secretary. Upon her high school graduation, she then pursued a degree from Draughns Business College in Tulsa, Okla. While living in Oklahoma, she met and eventually married the love of her life, W.T. (Shorty) Steen and moved to Port Lavaca. Once in Port Lavaca, Nola became involved in the work force and community. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, and worked at Coastal Bank for many years and later she went to work at Burleson Tax Services for many years until her retirement. After retirement, Nola and Shorty both enjoyed their love of gardening and volunteered many hours of work to the Calhoun County Community Gardens. She also loved spending time camping and taking her grandkids to the beach and collecting shells. Her last few years were spent at Trinity Shores and she always enjoyed taking part in many activities. The staff treated her with respect and care and just like family. She was a special person who will be missed by all. Nola is survived by her sister, Fern Burton; daughters Dealma Burkholder and Doretha Steen; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her parents, Isom and Katie Hogan; her husband, W.T. (Shorty) Steen; her son, Larry W. Steen; two granddaughters and two great grandsons. Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home in Port Lavaca. The funeral will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home chapel with Dwayne Wise officiating. Pallbearers will be Clint Aylesworth, Brent Bradley, Steve Burton, Kevin Clore, Chris Hawes, and James Rapp. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Foundation of America, PO Box 96391, Washington DC 20090-6391.
