Bio

Joseph Mark Carter, 52 of Bailey, died at home on Friday, June 26, 2009, after a short, valiant battle with cancer. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park, Wilson. The Rev. William McConville will officiate. The family will receive friends 7-8:15 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will be a prayer service at 8:15 following the visitation. At other times the family will receive friends at the home of Henry Phillips, Bailey. He was born in Olathe, Kan., son of the late Mark and Coletta Carter, and grew up in Delavan, Wis., where he graduated from Delavan-Darien High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1979 until 1981, and the Army Reserves from 1981 until 1987, and received an MBA from Appalachian State University. One of the great joys of his life was his work with his Pembroke Welsh Corgi show dogs, which he had done for more than thirty years. Working with his dogs, as well as enjoying the community he found at dog shows, was a pleasure he enjoyed even through his illness. Another of the great joys of his life was his job at SAS, Inc. in Cary, where he was employed as a business director in health and life sciences. He was truly grateful for the loving support of the SAS family during the time of his illness. His wife, Dora Phillips Carter, whom he married in 1995, was always by his side and was truly his partner in life. He will be deeply missed by Dora; by his brothers and sisters, Mary Warren and husband, Craig, Stephen and wife, Judith, Monica Adams and husband, Keith, Michael and wife, Nancy, Gerard and wife, Eileen, Martin and wife, Debbie, and Ruth Pappas and husband, Rick; their families, including 18 nieces and nephews, and one grandniece. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Philomena; and brother, Bernard. Posted by the Wilson Times
