Longmont Times-Call (Longmont, Colorado) 3 November 2013 Ruth Virgie Conklin, 104, of Bayard, NE, formerly of the Longmont area, died October 31, 2013 at the Chimney Rock Villa in Bayard. Ruth was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma on February 9, 1909. She was the third of thirteen children, seven boys and six girls, born to the union of William N. Shafer and Bertha (Mattheyer) Shafer. Those who have gone before her are sisters, Bessie, Lucy, Ethel, Betty Jane, and Dorthea and brothers, Robert, Carl, Thomas, Jack, William, Walter and Joseph. Ruth married Walter Clay Conklin Sr. in Gering, NE on May 3, 1926. They raised six children, and celebrated 70 years of marriage before Walter's death in 1997. Ruth and Walter left Nebraska and moved to the Longmont area in Colorado in 1945. In retirement, they purchased a home in Niwot where they spent many happy years. She will be welcomed into heaven by Walter and their two sons Walter, Jr. and his wife Mary Anne, and Charles Wesley and three sons in law, George Mayhew, John Bady and Ben Williams, all of whom predeceased her. Her children who survive to cherish her memory are Virgie (Robert) Goodell, Idaho Falls, ID; Don (Helen) Conklin, Bayard, NE; Carrie Williams, Pueblo, CO and Lanie Bady, Pueblo, CO. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and fifty two great-great grandchildren and a host of friends and extended family. Ruth will always be remember as a kind and gentle person, a devoted wife and mother and the personification of a true lady. She was an avid gardener and a talented artist, well known for her beautiful roses and flowers. She was gifted in quilting, crocheting, tatting and painting. She loved life and maintained her cute sense of humor. Farewell dear Mother. Graveside services and interment will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
