Published in the Ord Quiz, Ord, Nebraska, Thursday, January 23, 1992, Page 8, Column 3 & 4 Chapel Services for Walter Shafer Funeral services for Walter (Walt) Shafer were held Friday, January 17, in Ord. Burial was in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military rites by the Ord V.F.W. and American Legion. Walter Shafer died January 14, 1992 at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island. He was 65. Walt was born May 29, 1926 at Minatare, NE to William and Bertha (Mattheyer) Shafer. He was raised in Shelton, NE and attended school there. He attended N.Y.C.A. School at Kearney before entering the United States Navy on November 16, 1944. He served until June 29, 1946 during WWII. His rank was Fireman 1st Class. After the service, Walt worked for the railroad at North Platte, He was married to Carole German, March 23, 1950, at Shelton. They moved to North Highlands, CA where he worked as a machinist at McClellan Air Force Base. In 1958 they moved to Lincoln where he worked for Ford Van Lines. They also lived in Omaha while he continued his work for Ford Van Lines. In 1978 they moved to Ord and purchased the Someplace Else Tavern. He continued to operate the tavern until his death. He was a member of the Ord V.F.W.; the Ord Elks Lodge and the South Omaha Eagles. Survivors are his wife Cay of Ord; two daughters, Karen Jameson of Warren, RI and Linda Shafer of Stevensville, New Foundland, Canada; three grandchildren; two brothers, Robert and Elba and Joe of Erickson; four sisters, Ruth Conklin of Niwot, CO, Ethel Stearns of David City, Betty Gibbons of Kenesaw and Dorothea Ellis of North Highland, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
