Son of David Smith and Alice Greenwood Husband of Josephine Avon Dickson, 27 June 1946, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Obituary. Joseph Marion Smith, 85, died Dec. 31, 2005, from causes incident to age. He was born on Jan. 5, 1920, to David and Alice Greenwood Smith in their home in Salt Lake City. He is the last surviving sibling in the Smith family. His brother and sisters are David G. Smith, Ellen Moody, Rachel Jensen, and Josephine Voda. A fiercely independent man, Joe was known for his sense of humor, gift of gab, adventurous nature, and optimistic love of life. He traveled the world and enjoyed practicing Spanish wherever he could. He grew up in Salt Lake City and spent summers at Sand Creek, the family sheep ranch in Hanna, Utah. He graduated from East High School and Utah State University. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina where he formed a lifelong fraternity of friends, the Chhelle (Chris) Falco, and David (Ann) Smith. He has 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was a good provider and very generous with his resources. His home in East Millcreek and second home in Hanna were always filled with family and friends. He was an entrepreneur and succeeded in various business ventures from sales to sheep ranching to fast food franchises. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in the Young Men's organization, as a temple worker, and holds a record for longevity as a stake clerk. The family wishes to express thanks to the skilled caregivers at the Silverado Senior Living Center where he spent his last year. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the Valley View Stake Center, 2245 E. 3900 S., in Salt Lake City. Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E. 1300 S., and Thursday, 10 a.m. at the church. He will be buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
