Bio

God saw she was getting tired...And a cure was not to be...So He put His arms around her...And whispered, "Come with Me!"...With tearful eyes we watched her...And saw her fade away...Although we loved her dearly...We could not make her stay...A golden heart stopped beating...Hard working hands to rest...It broke our hearts to prove to us...God only takes the best! Josephine Ann Voda passed away on July 19, 1996 after many years of struggling with the problems of Alzheimer's Disease. She was born on June 10, 1914, in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of David and Alice Greenswood Smith. She was married to Dean Reese Merrill on Sept. 9, 1939 and had a son, David. Later divorced. She later married Edward John Voda, on August 2, 1946 and had another son, Edward Joseph Voda. She loved the outdoors and animals. As a young girl, she spent many weeks during the summer at her father's ranch in Hanna, Utah. They lived in Holladay on some acreage where she also had animals. One of the last horses that she had was a favorite called Danny. She saw beauty in most things and was able to express what she saw through her art work and the written word. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she taught in many positions. She was also actively involved in family history work. She graduated from BYU with a business degree after high school. Then after her children were grown, she attended the University of Utah to complete a degree in Education. She taught at and was head of the English department at Bonneville Junior High School for a period of 10 years. She was also a member of the Silver Spurs Riding Club and served as an officer in that organization. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David Smith; and a son, Edward J. Voda. She is survived by her husband, Ed Voda; her son, David (Shirlie) Voda of Evanston, Wyoming; a daughter-in-law, Cherie, Sandy, Utah; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; also sisters, Ellen Moody and Rachel Jensen, and a brother, Joseph (Josephine) Smith, all of Salt Lake City; and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed, but at least will be free of the mind-robbing disease that slowly took her from her loved ones. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 23, 1:30 p.m. at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 So. State, where friends may call Monday from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.
