Charles S. "Charlie" Hinkle, 88, of Advance died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in St. Louis, after an extended illness. He was born Feb. 7, 1913, at Brownwood, Mo., son of William and Bess Reed Hinkle. He and Berniece "Sis" Rhodes were united in marriage Jan. 19, 1946. She survives of the home. Charlie was a prominent Advance businessman. For 37 years he and his wife, Sis, owned a popular restaurant, initially located on Highway 25 and later on Sturdivant Street in downtown Advance. It went by many names including "Charlie's Place" and later "Advance Cut Rate," which was a general merchandise store. They sold that business in 1983 but continued working on their 80-acre farm in Tilman, Mo. Charlie also served more than 15 years on Advance Board of Aldermen. During that tenure the board paved streets, built city hall, and brought Inland Shoe Factory to Advance. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Sis; a son, Lynn Hinkle of St. Louis; a daughter, Karen Schaefer of Sikeston; two sisters, Sally Finger of Cape Girardeau, Betty Phillips of St. Louis; three grandchildren, Bryan Schaefer of Webster Groves, Mo., Madelyn and Evan Hinkle of St. Louis. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Dempsey Hinkle; three sisters, Verbeena White, Alma "Johnnie" Burger and Nettie Fulbright. Burial will be in Morgan Memorial Park.
