Born to Milton Merrifield (1817–1888) & Margaret Ann Singleton Merrifield (1824–1901). A terrible tornado swept across the prairie of North Texas on April 29, 1856. The Merrifield home was demolished. But none of the family was killed, though many families were not so fortunate. When the storm struck the Merrifield home, baby Maggie was lying in her cradle. Both baby and crib were blown out into the yard into a large rose bush; the bush cradled and held the crib protecting the baby, perhaps saving her life. Maggie's family has kept a rose cutting off that bush for many years. --from the Dallas County Pioneer Association. Maggie married Henry Forrest Haswell (1845–1906) about 1871. Nine of 13 children lived to maturity: Ada J. Haswell Smith (1872–1930) Walter George Haswell (1874–1941) Mary M. Following brief rites at Weiland Funeral Church, the cortege proceeded overland to Cedar Hill, where services were held at the Methodist Church. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery. Born in 1855, the daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Milton Merrifield, who came to Dallas County in 1847, Mrs. Haswell was in her cradle at the Cedar Hill settlement when a cyclone struck the place in 1856. Although the storm killed seven persons, injured others and destroyed her parents’ home, Mrs. Haswell was found uninjured when the storm had passed, the wind having left the cradle leaning against a tree. Mrs. Haswell’s grandfather, Jackie Merrifield, in 1847 settled on Hampton Road in a cabin now standing near the George Titterington home. Mrs. Haswell was a member of the Methodist Church for many years. She is survived by two sons, W.G. Haswell of Cedar Hill and J.S. Haswell of Dallas; five daughters, Mrs. D. Daniels, Mrs. R.R.
