Bio

Archie was was the third of George & Cynthia (Vance) Dodson's children. On Feb. 20, 1893, they left Ft. Douglas, Johnson Co, AR, by covered wagon to join her brother, William Henry Vance, and his family in Stony Point. They had two sons, William and James. Cynthia had five children from her first marriage to John Preston (Sarah, Smith, Dora, Walter, & Mary). Archie was born the following year. Following are some excerpts are from my book "Dodson One Family's Journey." Archie's Preaching Cynthia liked to tell a story about her son, Archie, when he was about three years old. One of their cats had died, and they had buried it. Later, Cynthia found him standing over the cat's grave, preaching its funeral. She was impressed, because he was doing a perfect job of imitating their preacher. (Helen Sinor Holland) Archie's Death Little Archie, who had added so much happiness to their lives, suddenly became ill and died from a ruptured appendix on July 26, 1897. He was laid out in the parlor, where friends and neighbors paid their respects. During his short life, his good nature and pleasant disposition won the hearts of all those around him. It was on a hot, dusty day, in the midst of a long dry spell, that he was buried in the Altoga Cemetery. A brief notation, one that hardly did justice to the passing of such a cherished child, was found on the front page of the McKinney Democrat on the 5th of August: "The three year old son of G.B. Dodson died last week and was buried at the Altoga graveyard."
