Joe Stanislav, Jr., 88, of Grand Island, formerly of Central City, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at the Veteran's Medical Center in Grand Island. Joe was born in Linwood to Joe Sr. and Emma (Johannes) Stanislav. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Jo, on Dec. 16, 1951. Survivors are: his wife, Rosie of Grand Island; son and daughter-in-law, Max and Linda Stanislav of Grand Island; daughters and son-in-law, Jolene and Aziz Anis of Kansas City, Mo., and Marcia and Riley George of Eustis; five granddaughters and five great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. He grew up and received his education in Linwood and then completed his high school diploma through the Veteran's education program. He served with the Third Army Division from August 1942 to November 1944 and was stationed in North Africa and Italy. Joe was a highly decorated soldier and among other honors, he was awarded three purple hearts and two bronze stars. On Feb. 22, 1946, Joe Stanislav, Jr. and Roselia M. McMahon were united in marriage at the St. Michael's Catholic Rectory in Central City. They made their home northwest of Central City where they farmed for 50 years. They retired to live in Aurora for 14 years and had moved to the Riverside Lodge in Grand Island in 2009. Joe was a member of the Military Order of Purple Heart, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, golfing, hunting, loved animals, and was a rock hound. Joe loved flowers and was known for the beautiful flower gardens at their home. Joe's greatest joy came from the time he spent with his family and especially his grandchildren. Joe was also preceded in death by his parents. Published in The Grand Island Independent on 10/9/2010
