Edward Stieren, 76 Edward John Stieren was born August 10, 1927, in Dodge, Nebraska, the son of Anton and Mary (Rolf) Stieren. He was called from this life on Saturday, January 24, 2004, at Bethany Care Center in Alexandria, Minnesota. He attained the age of 76 years. Edward was baptized on August 11, 1927, and confirmed into the Catholic faith in Dodge, Nebraska. Edward grew up in Beemer, Nebraska and graduated from high school there in 1945. Edward served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He and his brother, Hilburt, then went into business operating Stieren Transfer. In 1947, he began farming in Leigh, Nebraska. On July 3, 1951, Edward was united in marriage to Maxine Frances Hamann at St. Mary's Church in Leigh, Nebraska. To this union, three children were born. Together, Edward and Maxine were able to share in 52 years of marriage. In 1964 Edward and his family moved to Benson, Minnesota, where he farmed until 1999. Edward and Maxine bought a lake home in Alexandria in 1989 where they eventually retired. Edward was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Francis Men's Club and the Swift County Pork Producers. He loved to fish and enjoyed camping and dancing. Edward is survived by his wife: Maxine of Alexandria; son: Michael Stieren of Glencoe; two daughters: Lynn Novak of Brennyville; and June (Brad) Skarsten of Benson; five grandchildren: Stephanie Stieren, Ryan Skarsten, Nathan Novak, Nathan Stieren and Laura Skarsten; three sisters: Laura Guenther of West Point, NE; Eleanor Spenner of Beemer, NE; and Beatrice (Mac) Seeman of Beemer, NE; and other relatives. Edward was preceded in death by his parents: Anton and Mary; sister: Minnie Kuehler; brother: Hilburt Stieren , and a son-in-law: Dick Novak. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2004 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson with Father Steven Verhelst officiating. The organist was Della Conroy and song leader was Jeanie Rittenour. Active casketbearers were Nathan Stieren, Ryan Skarsten, Nathan Novak, Gordy Seeman, Jeff Barrett and Jason Medalen. Honorary casketbearers were Ward Fennell, Roy Berens, Ben Hofmann, Gene Reiman and Richard Macziewski. Interment was in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Benson. Military honors were by Benson VFW Post #1403. Arrangements were with the Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson. Obituary: Echo Press, Alexandria, Minnesota - February 4, 2004
