Bio

Neils Sterling Coates, 78, passed away May 13, 1996 at his home in West Valley City. "God knew you were suffering, that the hills were hard to climb; so He gently closed your eyelids and whispered ``peace by thine.'' In tears we watched you fade away; our hearts were nearly broken, you fought so hard to stay. It broke our hearts to see you go, but you did not go alone; for part of us went with you the day God called you home". Born June 13, 1917 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, son of John William and Ovina Wahlin Coates. Married Elaine Simper, August 10, 1962 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He retired from Kennecott Copper Corp. after 31 years. Devoted member of the LDS Church where he served as a High Priest and was active in temple work. Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, skiing and swimming. Neil and his wife enjoyed dancing with many friends several times each month. Survived by his wife, Elaine, of 34 years; children: Rex (Linda) Coates, Romona, California; Pat (Robert) Perkins, Betty (Stephen) Gar, all of Magna; stepchildren: Ilean (Ray) Tippets, Riverton; Allen (Lou) Robinson, St. George; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Reba (Neils) Angert, Los Angeles; Venice Cannaday, Salt Lake City; brother: Ralph T. Coates, Taylorsville. Preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held Friday, 12 noon at the Hunter Third Ward, 3737 South 5600 West. Friends may call Thursday, 5-8 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home, 4330 South Redwood Road and Friday at the church, 11-11:45 a.m. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens.
