Civil War veteran. Private in the 71st Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. William "Nicholdson" enrolled for 3 months' service on 19 July 1862 at Middletown (now called Mahomet), Champaign County, Illinois. He was then age 26, single, a farmer resident in the county's Mahomet Township; born in Hamilton County, Ohio. He was 5 feet, 7 inches, with brown hair, gray eyes, and a fair complexion. Private Nicholdson was mustered in Company H, 71st Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on 26 July 1862 in Chicago, Illinois. The 71st Illinois was assigned to garrisons in southern Illinois and western Kentucky, and the regiment and its personnel were mustered out on 29 October 1862 on expiration of term of service. (The 71st Illinois lost 23 men to disease.) William "Nicholson" and Martha C. Osborn were married on 4 September 1878 in Champaign County. "William Nichelson of Callaway who was taken to the insane hospital at Hastings week before last by Sheriff Talbot, died at that institution last week Sheriff Talbot was informed.
