The Custer County Chief Thursday 8 July 1926, p. 8 Prominent Farmer Dies After Long Residence The death of S. Neth, which occurred at his home southwest of Broken Bow, takes a pioneer who has spent more than forty years in Custer county. During this time, he has established himself as a substantial farmer and citizen and has taken a great interest in public affairs. The funeral was held at the Methodist church in this city on Wednesday afternoon, the service being conducted by Rev. Donner of the United Brethren church. The church edifice was crowded to its fullest capacity by old time neighbors and friends from the Neth community and Broken Bow business men and people of the city who had known and esteemed the deceased for a long term of years. Burial was made in the Custer Center Cemetery northwest of this city, where the body was laid to rest beside the wife who passed away only a few months ago. S. Neth was born in Wurtemberg, Germany January 17, 1857 and died July 5, 1926, at the age of 69 years 5 months and 18 days. He was sixteen years of age when he came to the United States. for three months after his arrival in America, S. Neth lived in Ohio, and then he went to Illinois, where he resided until 1882. In that year he paid a visit to Custer county, where he secured a homestead. He returned to Illinois, but March 4, 1883, he came back to this county, where he since remained. His original home was a tract of 160 acres homestead. Mr. Neth has always been a farmer. Until 1897, Mr. Neth resided in his original sod house, but in that year he erected a pleasant and comfortable frame home on his farm. He has taken active and helpful interest in the affairs of the community and has been the incumbent of public office on several occasions, having served as a member of the board of county commissioners in 1892, 1893, 1894, 1898 and 1899. Mr. Neth's mother died in Germany in 1893. His father died in 1918. Mr. Neth was married in Illinois to Miss Alice Huffman, who preceded him to the home above last November, also two children, one son John, and one daughter, Stella, nine children being born to this union of which several are living, Frank Neth and Mrs. D. C. May of Callaway, Mrs. Frank Jenkins, Homer, Carl and Raymond all living in Union Valley and Mrs. Floyd Rapp living east of Broken Bow. He leaves to mourn his loss seven children, twelve grandchildren, one brother George Neth of Fairbury, Ill., and several cousins from Gentry, Arkansas. Lee Neth, Edd Neth of Spring Creek and all of the above were present except Homer who on account of sickness went to Lincoln.
