The Custer County Chief Friday 31 March, 1899, p. 8 Obituary Selina (sic) Estella Neth, oldest daughter of Sebastian and Alice J. Neth, was born in Vermillion county, Illinois, October 10th, 1881, and died at her home in Union Valley, Nebraska, March 21st,(sic) 1899, aged 17 years, and 5 months, and 11 days; after an illness of nearly two weeks, from the effects of measles, complicated with other troubles, causing heart failure. Her suffering at times was very severe, yet she was perfectly submissive and endured her afflictions with a wonderful degree of patience. she seemed to be conscious of the fact before she was taken sick, that she would not be able to survive the ordeal of the dreadful disease, and made several statements before and during her sickness, giving assurance to this fact. She was perfectly reconciled, and her last moments were peaceful and serene. She was a bright, intelligent and industrious young lady, loved and respected by all of her associates, and equally as well with all others that knew her. On account of the serious illness of other members of the family, the funeral was deferred until some time in the future, and no one of the family only her father, were permitted to accompany the remains to the cemetery. A short service was conducted at the house by Rev. Hornaday, of the M. E. church of Broken Bow, which was very impressive, after which the remains were taken to the Custer Center cemetery and laid to rest in the home of the silent dead. Being the first and only young lady, whose body lies resting sweetly beneath the green award of the Custer Center cemetery; how unwelcome is the relentless hand of death, when he steals into the sacred home and takes a tender, loving and beautiful flower from the unbroken wreath of the home circle bringing wounds to the hearts of loved ones, that no human sympathy will ever be able to console. There's a sadness that will come to each member of this dear household, when they see the vacant chair of Stella's and view with loving remembrance the many mementoes(sic) that call to memory the sweet pastime and the many happy hours that have been spent in sweet communion in the most happy place on earth, the loving sacred home. This young life was just emerging into womanhood, having passed only a short distance from the shore line on life's great sea, when the spirit took its flight, unincumbered (sic) by the tenement of clay, to soar the beautiful fields, Elysian, in the sweet home of the soul. She leaves a father, mother, four brothers and three sisters to mourn her loss, and many other homes have been made sad and sorrowful by the very sudden death of Stella. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the entire community, in this, their sad bereavement. A rose is plucked from earth's boquet, Transplanted in that House of love; A loved one has passed from earth away To join the shining hosts above, A fair young flower of brightest hue, Has crossed the bloom of life's highway; In radiance bright beyond the blue, Shall ever dwell in endless day. A voice is hushed to mother's call, And coming footsteps heard no more; That listening ears from each and all, Have heard so oft in days of yore. an empty room, the silence keep, Where once the hours were sweetly spent; And happy hours would soothe to sleep, A life so pure and innocent. A vacant chair is seen each day, At early dawn or evening light; And whispering softly, some will say, Stella, we miss at home tonight. An as the days shall come and go, bringing sorrow or grieving bliss; Sweet memory, whispers this we know, We'll meet again the one we miss. Tis' only just a little while, We'll say farewell to those we love; Then we shall meet our darling child, In that sweet happy home above; Where life is pure, and love complete, And death and parting never mar; Their parents will their children greet, Who passed through pearly gates ajar. —G. R. Russum ***** The Custer County Republican 30 March 1899 E. Neth Died from the effects of measles, Tuesday morning, March 22, 1899, Estella S., oldest daughter of Sabastian (sic) and Alice Neth, aged seventeen years, five months and eleven days. Deceased was born in Vermillion county, Ill(sic), and came with her parents to this county when yet a mere child, and as she grew to womanhood, she drew to her by her affectionate disposition and lady like manners a host of loving associates who sincerely mourn her loss. The many loving deeds done for her young friends will endear her to their memory while life shall last; but it is the family who will so sorely miss Estella. The care of the younger children devolved largely on her, ans she always discharged this duty with pleasure; no child ever appealed to her and was refused any little favor that she could bestow.
