Death Takes G. W. McKee at Eighty-One Years Last week's Leader stated that G. W, McKee was nearing death. That item was written Thursday afternoon. Mr. McKee passed away within forty-eight hours from the time that was written. The funeral was held at the M. E. church in this city at two o'clock Monday afternoon, May 11. Robert Spooner was the funeral director. The Rev, C. M. Estabrook, pastor, of the church preached the sermon. The singing was by Mrs. Grace J. (W. R.) Kidder. Mrs. Eva (Robert G.) Brown being at the piano. The songs used were “What a Friend we have in Jesus”, “The Lord, My Shepard I’ll not want” and “Savior I Follow on”. The pall bearers were Sam Adams, Ray Fleming, Roy Leach, Bert Smith, Harry Sherman and Emil Wosleben. Interment was made in the Sargent cemetery. George William McKee was born at Ithaca, Ohio, January 31, 1855, and passed to his eternal rest from his home in Sargent, Nebraska, May 9, 1936, at the age of 81 years, 3 months, and 9 days. When Mr. McKee was seventeen years of age he accompanied his parents from Ohio to Nebraska, locating at Nebraska City. That was in the year 1872. After residing there for several years, the family moved to Seward county, locating seven or eight miles north of Seward. In the year 1879 Mr. McKee was married to Miss Mary Lang and to this union were born eleven children, eight sons and three daughters. Three son s and one daughter have preceded their father in death. A few years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. McKee came to Custer County and Mr. McKee filed home stead papers on land six or seven miles northwest of Sargent. There they lived until about twenty-five years ago when they left the farm to make their home in Sargent, and they have resided in Sargent ever since. By trade Mr. McKee was a Mason and after locating in Custer county he worked at his trade whenever there was an opportunity. In the summer of 1900 John K. Spacht, deceased, had the brick store building now occupied by the J. C. Penney Co. store erected. Mr. McKee helped lay the brick for this building. Speaking of J. K. Spacht and G. W. McKee, the two men were acquainted in Seward county before coming, to Custer county. Mr. Spacht was a merchant at Seward. Mr. McKee was a farmer living seven miles or more from that place. In the summer of 1883 Mr. Spacht helped to found the town of Sargent. About that time, it may have been a year or two later, Mr. McKee was' locating on a farm several miles northwest of Sargent Mr. McKee leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, who has been constantly at his side for the past three years, and five sons and two daughters. The sons are Fred McKee of Broken Bow, Neb., Nels McKee of Scottsbluff, Neb.; Abner McKee, now in California; Claude and Floyd McKee of Sargent. The two daughters are Mrs. Maud (Lester) Hall of the Madison Square country, post office Sargent, Nebr., and Mrs. Maybelle Hall of Omaha, Nebraska. He also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, and many friends. Mr. McKee was one of the pioneer Methodists in this section of the country, having been one of the first members of the Methodist Episcopal church that was established in West Union in early days. Later on he transferred his membership to Methodist church in Sargent. Servant of God, well done. Thy glorious warfare past; The battle fought, the victory won, and thou art crowned at last.
