Genevieve Alona Gibbens was born July 20, 1919, at Sargent, Nebraska, and departed this life October 10, 1942, at 3 A.M. at the Mountain View hospital in San Luis Obispo, California, at the age of 23 years, 2 months and 10 days. Genevieve lived with her parents, brothers and sisters near Sargent until her marriage to Carl H. Clay, July 20, 1936. After their marriage they lived at various places in Custer and Loup counties. They moved to California in April, 1941, and that was her home until the time of her death. Jenny, as she was known to all, was a kinds-end loving daughter to her father and mother, and a wonderful wife to Carl. She always planned ahead and never complained when things were a little hard-going while making their start in life together. Jenny was a true Christian at heart and a great lover of nature, as through nature all who love God can see his handiwork. She enjoyed drives to the mountains to observe these things. A short time before she went to the hospital, she took her usual drive to the ocean. October was her favorite month. It was planned that her next visit to Nebraska would be at that season of the year. Jenny's wish was fulfilled; she made her last trip home in October. She loved children and had made many plans for her baby. Her desire was to rear the child in the love of God. She planned to have her baby baptized and dedicated to God. A short service was held at the Richardson Funeral Home in San Luis Obispo. There was a large attendance of friends both from civilian life and from the army camp where Carl is employed. Those left to mourn her loss are her husband, Carl, and her seven days old son, Jeffrey Charles Clay, her mother, Mrs. Mintie Gibbons, four brothers and six sisters. The brothers are:- Harley Gibbens, Nampa, Idaho; Archie Gibbens, ten miles south of Sargent, post office, Ansley, Nebraska; Vernie Gibbens, North Platte. Nebraska; Thomas William Gibbens. Fort Lewis, Washington. The sisters are:- Mrs. Pearl (Claris) Amos, Shubert, Nebraska; Mrs. Lillian (Bert) Sevier, Sargent, Nebraska; Mrs. Sylvia (Frank) Cooksley, North Platte, Nebraska; Mrs. Tressa (Ed) Russell, Gates, Nebraska; Clarice Gibbens, Lincoln, Nebraska; and Mrs. Gloria (Oscar) Swick. She was preceded in death by her father Thomas Jefferson Gibbens who died August 31, 1941, and by two brothers, one in infancy, and one, Kyle Robert, at the age of seven years. Rev. Dr. Hart, from California, sent the following poem to Carl Clay at the request of Carl's mother. No, not cold beneath the grasses Not close-walled within the tomb; Rather, in my father's mansion, Living in another room. Living, like the one who loves me, like yon child with checks abloom, Out of sight, at desk or school-book, Busy in another room.
