The Fairbury Journal County Surveyor N. E. Davis died at his home in this city of erysipelas, after a short illness Monday, October 14, aged 73 years, 9 months and 23 days. Nathaniel Emmons Davis was born in Niagara County, New York, January 21, 1834. He went to Illinois soon after coming of age, spending five years in various places of the west. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Ninety-second Illinois Infantry. He was taken prisoner and spent several months in Southern prisons, most of the time in Andersonville. In September 1865 he came to Jefferson County, Nebraska, taking a homestead on Rose Creek, and has since resided in this county. Soon after Mr. Davis came here he was elected County Surveyor and has held that office a majority of the time since. He was married December 1, 1869 to Harriet E. Holden, of Youngstown, New York. He leaves behind him to mourn his loss, three brothers, and one sister, besides the sorrowing wife and children of whom Robert E, Jason, and Sarah E are present with us, one Jabez having died in May of 1907, the eldest, Lucinda, having died in infancy. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church, the pastor being in charge. Internment in the Fairbury cemetery.
