From The Palmer Journal, November 20, 1941, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney: Richard Bruno Burkhardt, Sr. was born August 22, 1875 in Thurm, Sachsen, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Langenberg. On April 17, 1893 he came to America, working one year near Wolbach and seven near Grand Island. In the year 1901 he settled in Howard county on a farm five miles west from Palmer. In the year 1901 he was among those who organized St. John's Lutheran Church and for many years was an officer of the congregation and a voting member to the time of his death. In the year 1902 on June 8 he was united in holy wedlock to Wilhelmina Kruse of Worms community. This union was blessed with ten children. After a lingering illness of about two years he departed his life Nov. 11, 1941, having reached the age of 66 years, 2 months and 19 days. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. He leaves his sorrowing wife, the children, Hugo, Fred, Otto and Bruno of Idaho, Harry of Vale, Oregon, Arthur, Mrs. Charles Eckstrom, Edna, Meta and Richard of Palmer, one son-in-law, two daughters-in-law, nine grandchildren, two brothers, Paul of Palmer and Emil living in Germany and one sister, Mrs. Henry Albers of Palmer.
