OBITUARY - The Baytown (TX) Sun - Tuesday, 29 Oct 1985 HARGIS SERVICES TO BE HELD Retired Band Director, Longtime Educator Dies Services for retired band director Elmer Ross Hargis, 64, of Baytown will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Navarre's Paul U Lee Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Norman officiating. Hargis died Sunday at a Houston hospital. He was the band director at Baytown Junior School for 20 years before becoming the first band director at Ross S. Sterling High School. Hargis was later the band director at Cedar Bayou Junior School. He retired two years ago after 37 years of teaching. A US Air Force World War II veteran, he was a member of a pioneer Cedar Bayou family. Hargis attended Ashbel Smith and Lamar Elementary schools, Horace Mann Junior School and graduated from Robert E Lee High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University and his master's from the University of Houston. He was a life member of the Texas Teacher Association, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 912, the Baytown Education Association and Elks Lodge No. 1649. Hargis was also a member of the National Music Educators, the Texas Music Educators Association, and the Baytown Teacher Credit Union, of which he served as president. Hargis also participated in Boy and Girl Scout work and was active in the Parent-Teacher Association. He was also an avid sportsman and belonged to the Bayshore Rod and Rell Club, the Houston Sportsman Association and the Salt Water Anglers of Texas. Hargis was also a member of a committee on water pollution and erosion control. Hargis was preceded in death by his brother Sgt. George Lee Hargis. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hargis of Baytown; a daughter, Mary Jane Lansford of Pasadena; a son and daughter-in-law, Ross Lee and Elizabeth Hargis of Baytown; his parents, Elmer and Frances Ann Hargis of Harlingen; a sister, Virginia Brinson of Crosby; and a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy Mae and Harold Parker of Georgetown. Two grandsons, Marcus Lee Lansford and Gerald Wayne Lansford, both of Pasadena, also survive. Burial will be at the Masonic Cemetery. Arrangements are under direction of Navarre's Paul U Lee Funeral Home.
