Without thought of his own safety Steve and another man left their safety and ran up the hill. a mortar shell fell nearby and Steve was critically wounded . A short time later he died. I can not express my feelings for a man who gave his life so unselfishly that another man might be saved I hope in your grief you might find some consolation in having such a brave mna for a brother. .. edited from The Eugene Guard Sunday Feb 4th 1945 Tragically, Steve's brother Emil died as a POW of the Japanese His wife was Katherine Palanuk Before the war he had worked for a lumbar company.
