Rush County, Kansas Newspaper in 1943. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gilbert, of McCracken, were notified Tuesday, in a telegram from the War Department, that their son, Pvt. Walton Gilbert, had died from malnutrition in a prison camp, somewhere in the Philippines. They had heard nothing from him since 1942 when he was reported as being a prisoner of the Japanese. Pvt.Gilbert was taken prisoner of war after the fall of Corregidor and was interned in a Japanese prison camp. The telegram stated that he had died of starvation in 1943. Walton had attended school at McCracken and graduated from the McCracken high school in the class of 1934. ******************************************************** U.S. Army Service No. (ASN): #20939265 Enlistment Date: 04/17/1941 at Fort Stevens, Oregon Entered the Service from: Oregon 34th Pursuit Squadron, 24th Pursuit Group Walton L.
