On 19 Dec 1944, mission was to deliver critical air support to ground forces in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Pettigrew was in B-17, #42-50597, called "Beaver's Baby" when it crashed in heavy fog during takeoff. There were no survivors. Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart
