He married 3 times and had children by all 3 wives Upon enlisting into the War of the Rebellion, Mr. Brooks was 5' 8" tall, he had dark-colored hair, had dark eyes, and had a dark complexion. He was living in Noble, Richland County, Illinois, and was a farmer. He enlisted into Company D, 8th Illinois Infantry on 14 August 1861.
