Bio

Tyler was a son of John A. Meriweather (1851–1933) and Mary E. Tyler (1852–1940). He was born and raised in Decatur, Illinois before attending Hiram College, the University of Pennsylvania and graduating from the Jefferson Medical College. He became a physician and surgeon and returned to Decatur to practice. On 10 Mar 1910 in Chicago, Illinois, he married Mina G. Naso, daughter of Anders Naso (1845–1921) and Sigrid Blekken (1846–1924) of Norway; Tyler and Mina did not have children. Tyler was originally buried in Greenwood Cemetery but moved to Fairlawn in 1959. ————— Herald and Review (Decatur, Illinois), 13 March 1910, Sunday Friends of Miss Mina Naso of Chicago and Dr. Tyler Meriweather of this city were surprised last week to learn of their marriage which took place Thursday at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Naso in Chicago. The bride formerly lived this city and has many friends here. She is the sister of Mrs. H. C. Kepler 459 Ewing Avenue. The only particulars concerning the wedding which have been received in this city came in a letter to Mrs. Kepler merely announcing that the wedding had taken place Thursday. Dr. Meriweather has taken a house in the 500 block in South Webster street and the couple will make their home there on returning to this city. ————— The Decatur Daily Review (Decatur, Illinois), 24 May 1946, Friday Meriweather, Physician Here 45 Years, Dies Dr. Tyler Meriweather, practising physician in Decatur for 45 years, died at 4:35 a. m. today in St Mary's hospital where he had beea a patient since May 18. Dr. Meriweather was a member of one of Decatur's oldest families. Reuben H. Meriweather, his grand father, was one of the early settlers of Long Creek township, while his father, John A. Meriweather, was president of the National Bank of Decatur with which he was associated over a 50-year period. His mother was Mary Edna Tyler Meriweather, a daughter of Rev. John W. Tyler. Born In Decatur Dr. Meriweather, whose home was 646 South Seigel street, was born in Decatur June 27, 1875. He attended Decatur schools, and Hiram College, Hiram, Ohio. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania for one year and Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, for three years. He was graduated from this school in 1899 and began his practise in Decatur shortly after. He was married to Miss Mina Naso in Chicago in March 1910. Besides his widow he leaves a sister, Mrs. Charles Wolcott Kent of Los Angeles, a nephew, Jack Meriweather Kent and a niece, Mrs. Marian McMillan Potter. He served as chief surgeon for the Illinois Central railroad for 40 years and for many years was surgeon for the Illinois Terminal railroad, the Decatur Railway & Light Co., later the Illinois Power and Light Co. and now the Illinois Power Co. Did Government Service Dr. Meriweather also was a member of the U. S. Employes Compensation commission and during World War I was a medical examiner for the government. He was a member of the Decatur and Macon County Medical, Illinois State Medical and the American Medical associations, the College of Industrial Surgeons, the Decatur Club and the Decatur Country club. Private funeral services will be conducted at 10 a. m. Monday in the Dawson & Wikoff chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a. m. Sunday.
