James was a carpenter before enlisting 1861 at Camp Reeves, Texas, in the Confederate Army. Promoted to 4th Sgt. 1862, serving at Camp Reeves, Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma, and Columba, Tenn., being paroled by U.S. Army 1865 at Marshall, Texas. James married 1866 to Sarah Cloninger. In 1872 James and brother-in-law W. B. Cloninger, bought 200 acres just west of Black Cypress Creek and northeast of Sardis Community. James brought Cloninger's half in 1876. His home was four rooms with a double fireplace (back to back) and a porch across the front. James and Sarah had the following children: Zoe Maxvilla, Susan Justina, Robert Benjamin, Walter Dell, Alice May, and Samuel Lee.
