Connie Mae "Connie" (Pickens) Powell, 56, of Gilmer, Texas, passed away on March 28, 1990, in Longview, Texas, after a lengthy illness. Connie was born on June 26, 1933, in Upshur County, Texas, and was a life-long resident, the daughter of Ovie Mae (Jones) and David Boyd Pickens. She taught school most of her 30 years in the Gilmer Independent School District, where she began all-girl sports in the Gilmer school system. She was a member of Union Ridge Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Nathaniel "Trevelyn" Cates Powell; her daughter, Vicki Massey (husband, Dennis); a granddaughter. Constance Massey; three sisters, Jackie Sherman and Helen Williams, both of Longview, TX; and Mary Williams, Gilmer, TX. Pallbearers were: Sherwin Yo-cum, Harvey Rayson, James Johnson, Don Peek, Richard Garrison and Glenn Smith. Honorary pallbearers were: James Williams, James Beal, Dar-rell McDonald, Russell Green, Phil Ridout and Jay Huggins.
