Bio

Willard John Schroeder, son of William and Mary Schroeder, was born June 20, 1899 at Union, Iowa, and passed away July 2, 1975 at the Baptist Hospital in Winner, South Dakota at the age of 76 years and 12 days. At the age of 14 he moved with his parents to a farm south of Winner, South Dakota where he helped out the family income by working on nearby ranches. Thus he launched his life-long dream of cattle ranching at which he was very successful. He was always interested in helping young men get started in ranching. On March 11, 1924 he was united in marriage to Gail Titus of Springview. To this union one son, Elton was born. Their first home was on the Hank Slaughter ranch 18 miles north of Valentine in Todd County, South Dakota where he was the ranch foreman. In 1925 they leased a ranch 20 miles northeast of Valentine and started ranching on their own. In 1930 they purchased the ranch northwest of Springview where he and his wife spent the remainder of the 51 years together. Survivors include his wife, Gail; one son, Elton, one brother, Robert; four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Ruther, Mrs. Leta Chastain, Mrs. Helen Anderson and Mrs. Iola Blessing; and a host of other relatives and friends who knew Willard and neighbored with him and respected his sterling qualities and high standard of life and citizenship. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Walter and Henry.
