Ruther (Married March 10, 1925). ____________________ MIDLAND NEWS August 16, 1995 Valentine Cherry County Nebraska Dorothy E. Ruther Dorothy E. Ruther, 92, died Wednesday, August 9, 1995 at Castle Manor nursing Home in Hot Springs, SD. Dorothy E. Schroeder was born Oct. 19, 1902 at the old farm home of her grandfather Henry Schroeder near West Union, IA. Dorothy was the fourth child and oldest daughter of William E. and Mary (Degelamn Schroeder. Dorothy atteded town school at West Union and was very fond of her two grandmothers, and spent much time with them. Also she always remembered watching Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Shows which performed in Iowa at that time. At the age of ten she moved with her family to Colome, SD to a farm about six miles from town. She finished her schooling there and also attended Teachers College at Springfield, SD and Grand Island Business School. While at Grand Island she became very ill with smallpox and was uarantined for a long time; soon after she was called home to teach school. Her first school was at Wood, SD. She arrived there with a gentleman who was driving four horses on a lumber wagon. Dorothy taught school five years in Todd and Tripp Counties, SD and Keya Paha County. Dorothy was married, in Winner, SD, on March 10, 1925 to Frank T. Ruther of Springview. They lived all their married lives in Cherry and Rock Counties. On Jan. 1, 1990 they moved to Hot Springs were they lived until their deaths. They were the parents of four children, Keith, Gene, and a set of twins who died at birth. Dorothy was a very strong and courageous person, always ready to lend a helping hand. She loved the outdoors and loved doing good things for her family and friends. Her family ties were very strong. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; a set of twins; her parents; her brothers, Walter, Henry, Willard and Robert; sisters, Leta, Helen, and Viola. Dorothy is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Gene and Marlent Ruther of Hot Springs, SD, and Keith and Vivan Ruther of Mena, AR; grandsons and their spouses, Frank Ruther of Hot Springs, SD, Tim and Dena Ruther of Seattle, WA, Charles and Sandra Ruther of Derby, KS, and Gregory and Carolyn Ruther of Salt Lake City, UT; granddaughter and husband, Shirle and Bill McClain of Colorado Springs, CO; seven great-granddaughers; 2 great-great-granddaughters; sister-in-laws Martina Schroeder of Valentine, Josephine Schaeffer and Irma Ruther of Atkinson, and Gail Schroeder of Plattsmouth, Ne; brother-in-laws and their spouses, Ernest and Elaine Ruther of Springview, and Clarence and Betty Ruther of Springview, numerous nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces, and great-great-nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. McColleys Chapels of the Souther Hills in Hot Springs, SD was in charge of arrangments. Funeral services were Aug. 12, 1995 at the United Methodist Church in Valentine with Pastor Carroll Plisek as officiant. Interments were at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine.
