Published in StatesmanJournal on July 20, 2010 ELLEN MARIE WEST Jan. 11, 1947 - Jul. 16, 2010 KEIZER, OR - Ellen Marie (Grogan) West passed away peacefully at Salem Hospital in the early morning on July 16, 2010 with family members by her side. She died from complications that followed cardiac arrest. Ellen was born to Edward and Eva (Grow) Grogan in Tacoma, WA and moved to Salem, OR at a young age. She was the eleventh of twelve children. When Ellen was three years old, she lost her mother. She was raised from age four by Mae Z. (Smith) Grogan, who she knew and loved as her mom. Norman West had the good fortune of marrying her on June 5, 1964. She was a dedicated mother and homemaker, operating a home daycare business to help provide for their family while staying home with their children. In more recent years, she provided loving daycare for her grandchildren. Family was everything to Ellen. None of us will forget the enormous selection of foods on her beautifully decorated holiday table or the absolutely immense, puffy Christmas trees overflowing with presents each year. We will always remember her laughter while recounting the numerous camping "adventures" turned family lore. She made wedding cakes with the best frosting recipe known to mankind and then made quilts and blankets for the newlyweds or for the children that followed. Ellen enjoyed planting flowers and tending the garden at the Keizer home she raised her children in. Her love of family extended to the Robins nesting on her back porch. They were the only birds we knew with blankets strategically placed under their nest in case the babies fell. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Norman A. West; sons, Anthony West (Vicki) of Keizer, David West of Salem, and Jerome West (Michelle) of Dallas; daughter, Leanne West Eggert (Jonathan) of Keizer; brothers, Charlie, Earle, Merle, and Dan; sisters, Elaine and Shirleen; grandchildren, Nicole, Brian, Benjamin, Brandon, Emily, Ethan, Kian, and Noah; great-granddaughter, Gracelynn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Eva Grogan; her adopted mom, Mae Grogan; brothers, Patrick, James, Wesley, and Duane; sister, Phyllis. Although she will always reside in the hearts and memories of those that loved her, she will be greatly missed. A service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Keizer Funeral Chapel and officiated by Rev. Don Stephens. Viewing will be at 10 a.m. Private interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park and Mausoleum. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to The Nature Conservancy. Published in StatesmanJournal on July 20, 2010
