Betty A. Clabaugh, 86, of Kearney died Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Prairie View Gardens. Betty was born Aug. 31, 1923, in St. Paul to James and Josie (Eret) Bratka. On June 5, 1946, she married Vernon Clabaugh at Burwell. He died in 1986. Survivors are: her sister, Gloria Beach of Hildreth; brother, Frank "Bud" Bratka and his wife, Lois, of Burwell; nephews, Tim Rahmann and his wife, Myra, of Gibbon, Steve Bratka of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lex Bratka and his wife, Patti, of Burwell; nieces, Sandy Culler and fiancé Lynn Tacha of Kearney and Connie Benjamin of Lincoln; sisters-in-law, Jean Clabaugh of Kearney, Sarah Clabaugh of McCook and Gladys Ohlman of Kansas; brother-in-law, Jim Clabaugh and his wife, Marilyn, of Burwell; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She graduated from Burwell High School in 1941. She taught school for four years at Banner School, Midvale School and McIntyre School. She and Vernon made their home in Burwell for three years, and Vern was associated with International Harvester Co. In April 1949, they bought the International Harvester dealership in Kearney, which they owned and operated for 34 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Circle II and Spice (widowed women) at the church. She also belonged to two card clubs. Betty volunteered with many organizations wherever she was needed. She never had any children of her own but adopted her nieces and nephews and was very active in their lives. She loved to dance, and at the Prairie View Gardens Fourth of July celebration last week, she danced for the last time.
