Verna Darlene Abel, 79, of 123 S. Cooper, went to be with the Lord at 10:25 p.m. Sept. 1, 2008, at Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa.She was born Nov. 13, 1928 in Ottumwa to Avery C. and Pansy Gladys Keilkopf Ramsey. She married Charles Keith Abel July 21, 1949. He preceded her in death Sept. 9, 1993.A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1946 and of St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1950, she had been a resident of Ottumwa all of her life. She had been a registered nurse at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a volunteer teacher's assistant at Calvary Baptist Christian School. Surviving are three sons, Bryan (Melanie) Abel of Cedar Rapids, Gregory Abel of Glenwood and Brent (Stefanie) Abel of Ankeny; eight grandchildren, Jason Fish, Danielle Grabe, Nathan Reid, Jamie Wombacher, Matthew Reid, Sarah Reid, Jake Harrelson and Brook Abel; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Avery of Calona, Ill.; a brother, Claude (June) Ramsey of East Moline, Ill. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Charlene Reid; and a great-grandson, Noah Grabe. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Mel Kendall officiating. Burial will be in the Abel Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
