Services for James C. "Jimmie" Kerr, 95, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Floyd Stumbo and Doug Hale officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock. He died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002. He was born Oct. 4, 1907, in Lubbock County. He married Lora Elsie Derrick on Dec. 20, 1930, in Lubbock. She died Feb. 24, 2001. He graduated from Idalou High School in 1924 as valedictorian. He played basketball and attended Abilene Christian College until 1926. He then went to Texas Tech where he lettered in basketball in 1927 and 1928 and graduated in 1932 with a degree in civil engineering. He was the oldest living letterman in basketball from Texas Tech until his death. He worked part time during school at the Highway Department and continued to work for there after graduating from Tech. He served as assistant district engineer from 1938 to 1946 then started Kerr Construction in 1946. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors. He was a registered professional of Texas, served four years as alumni representative at the Texas Tech Athletic Council, was a trustee and senior board member of Abilene Christian University since 1966, was a member of Broadway Church of Christ since 1926 and served as an elder for 35 years. He was a founding father of the Children's Home of Lubbock and a member of the Founders Circle. Survivors include a son, Kenneth of Lubbock; two daughters, Lora Ann Neill of Denton and Jane Nichols of Lubbock; a sister, Amye Rhue Jay of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
