Bio

Daniel William Cockson, 63, died suddenly of natural causes on April 21, 2010, in Lincoln, where he had resided for the past 10 years. Dan was born on July 15, 1946, to Alvin Louis and Mary Elizabeth (Walsh) Cockson at St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island. Dan is survived by: daughter, Lisa Shumate of Crowley, Texas; siblings: Kathleen Bennett of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Jeannine Opp of Lincoln; Michael Cockson of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Rio Verde, Ariz.; David Cockson of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Cheryl Crawford of Gainesville, Va., and Mark Cockson of Fountain Hills, Ariz; 24 nieces and nephews. He attended Catholic elementary and secondary schools in Grand Island. Daniel's family moved to a home northeast of Doniphan after he had completed the seventh grade. He graduated from the eighth grade while attending (Hall County) District 40 Elementary School and graduated from St. Cecilia High School in Hastings in 1964. He received a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1968. Dan was employed throughout most of his professional career in and around Grand Island. Most recently Mr. Cockson was a credit manager for Southern Nebraska Public Power District in Grand Island for over 15 years, prior to taking an early retirement several years ago. He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, a sister Marcia and a nephew Ryan Cockson. Dan enjoyed Husker athletics, hunting, horseback riding and attending special family functions which celebrated the lives of those who were dear to him. Dan was especially devoted to his nieces and nephews, as they were to him. Dan's life gave witness to the importance of, "Living justly, loving tenderly and, walking humbly with our God."
