Porter. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leona G. Porter, 77, Omaha, formerly of the Arcadia area, died April 20, 1991, at a hospital in Papillion. Funeral services were held April 23 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Arcadia with the Rev. Murry Johnston Officiating. Music was provided by Joy Lutz, organist, and June and Vernon Babcock, vocalists. Pallbearers were Richard Janzen, Roy Hammond, Elvin Moody, Bob Moody, Durward Stunkel and Larry Ferguson. A memorial has been established to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Millard. Leona Grace Porter was born Feb. 10, 1914 near Ansley on a farm near Clear Creek in Custer County, to John A. and Verna M. (Sherbeck) Hyatt. She attended Deem School and joined Liberty Christian Church at a young age. On Feb. 10, 1934 she was united in marriage to Dick M. Whitman at Broken Bow. To this union was born one daughter, Dixie Lee. They lived on a farm south of Arcadia for ten years, later moving to Broken Bow in May 1944. Leona worked for many years at Master Cleaners and Carothers Hospital in Broken Bow. In 1956 they moved to York and to Lincoln in 1957. After Mr. Whitman's death, Mrs. Whitman spent a year in Florida with her daughter and son-in-law. In 1959 she was married to Ralph Porter. They resided on his farm until 1965, when they retired and moved to Arcadia. In 1979 Leona's ill health required her to be hospitalized, and she spent the past 11 1/2years in Omaha. Mr. Porter died in 1980. Mrs. Porter was a charter member of the B.P.O.E.Does of Broken Bow. Survivors include one daughter, Dixie L. Roseberry of Papillion; two granddaughter; and one great-grandson. She was also preceded in death by a brother and sisters.
