Bio

"Gilbert C. Pokorny, age 83, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Waldine Carlson Pokorny; his daughter, Susan Ellis; son, Phil Pokorny and wife Nancy (granddaughter Katie); son Bruce Pokorny and wife Sandy (granddaughters Allina and Kelsey); and son, Brent Pokorny and wife Teri (grandson Connor). He was preceded in death by his sister Elsie Barton, and his brothers Alex and Johnny Pokorny. Born on the family farm near Taylor to John and Olga Pokorny on October 27, 1925, Gilbert graduated from the University of Texas in 1945 as an officer in the U.S. Navy. After finishing his service to his country, he began a career as an electrical engineer with the City of Austin Electric Utility that spanned 40 years. Starting as a beginning engineer, he progressed through the years to become responsible for power production for the entire City of Austin, as Manager of the Power Production Division. During the course of his career, he was in charge of the on-site construction of Seaholm Power Plant unit 9, Holly Plant units 1, 2, and 3, Decker Plant units 1 and 2, Decker Dam, and also Longhorn Dam. Longhorn Dam not only provided a cooling reservoir for the Decker Power plants, but created Town Lake that will forever beautify the heart of Austin. Though he would never expect or demand it, this 'quiet hero' bettered the lives of every citizen of Austin. Gilbert always placed his family before himself. In every aspect of his life, he derived pleasure by providing for the wellbeing and happiness of others - his family, his friends, his church, and his community. A brilliant and multi-talented individual, Gilbert could build or fix anything. He also loved to cook, but most of all he loved supporting the interests of his children, from sports car racing, to fishing, to helping with construction of his children's homes. He also enjoyed supporting his Texas Longhorns. Although he will be greatly missed by his family, the love, the hard work, and the humble influence of Gilbert Pokorny will be felt by many for generations. We are all blessed to have had him in our lives...." ("Austin American-Statesman," January 8, 2009)
