Waldine Carlson Pokorny, age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 19, 2016. Waldine was born on the family farm outside of Georgetown, Texas, to Philip and Ruth Carlson on February 15, 1925. She enjoyed growing up in the close-knit Swedish farming community outside of Georgetown, which was centered around the Evangelical Free Church. Waldine graduated from Georgetown High School and earned a registered Nursing Degree from the Brackenridge School of Nursing. While at nursing school, beautiful Waldine met a handsome young Navy officer engineering student, Gilbert Pokorny, who was enrolled in the V-12 Navy College Training Program at the University of Texas and they were married on September 21, 1946. Waldine enjoyed a long nursing career at Brackenridge Hospital, where she helped deliver and care for many Austin babies. Her own family included her daughter, Susan Ellis, son, Phil Pokorny and wife Nancy (granddaughter Katie); son Bruce Pokorny and wife Sandy (granddaughter Kelsey); and son Brent Pokorny and wife Teri (grandson Connor). Waldine was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert Pokorny, granddaughter Allina Segner Pokorny; sisters, Jeanette Carlson Spring and Helen Carlson Ferrell. Waldine was so talented; she could sew like a tailor and cook like a chef. Growing up in the depression, Waldine developed so many life skills; she could fix and repair items to better than new, she loved to garden and enjoyed the results of her many projects. Her biggest assets were her loving heart and happiness with life. She had a smile that would light up a room and lifted the spirts of anyone who was around her. Her home where she and Gilbert raised their family was filled with this happiness and often became "home base" for the neighborhood kids to gather as well. Her positive outlook was contagious and people loved to be around Waldine. Her family will miss her tremendously, but will forever be enriched by her love and kindness. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Hospice Austin and Brookdale Spicewood Springs. The family will receive friends for a visitation at Cook-Walden /Capital Parks Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery. Please visit Waldine's memorial site at www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com where you can leave memories and condolences for her family.
