"Joe Conley Bowling, formerly an Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health Education, died July 10, 1992, after a lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife, V. A. Bowling; his daughter, Barbara May, of Houston; and his granddaughters, Kim Stickler, Kelli May, and Katherine May, all of Houston. Joe was the son of Barney and Nellie Bowling; he was born in Austin on February 25, 1912. Joe graduated from Austin High School, and he was awarded a scholarship in swimming to Rutgers University, in New Jersey. During his time at Rutgers, the swim team won national honors. After his return to Austin, Joe entered The University of Texas, graduating in 1938 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education. During the 1930's he continued his participation in sports, winning the Texas State diving championship six times during the 1930's. In 1939, Joe joined the faculty of The University of Texas as an instructor in the Department of Required Physical Education for Men. From 1942 to 1945 he served with the U.S. Coast Guard as a Chief Petty Officer. Upon his return to Austin, he resumed his teaching duties at U.T. and entered graduate school. He earned his Master of Education degree in 1948. During the summer months, he worked with the Boys Swimming Program at U.T. for twenty-five years. One of his students was Skippy Browning, who, while at U.T., became the NCAA diving champion. During this period, Joe also taught Red Cross Lifesaving Courses at St. Stephens School and swimming classes at the YMCA, the YWCA, and in the Boy Scouts program. Joe was inducted in the American Red Cross Hall of Fame in 1988, due in part to his having saved the life of a young swimmer at Lake Travis in 1954. Joe was a member of Grace Methodist Church for many years, where he taught a Couples class. At the time of his death he belonged to First Methodist Church. Joe Bowling was known throughout his life as a gifted and talented teacher of water sports. Several generations of Austinites remember his efforts on their behalf. To them, Joe was the "best." His work at the YWCA is particularly well remembered. Many Austin women swim today because of his dedication. During his forty-two years as a faculty member at U.T., he touched the lives of thousands of young men in the physical activity classes he supervised. After his retirement in 1981, he taught classes for the Division of Recreational Sports. His "students" were, themselves, retired faculty members. Joe was a U.T. Man to the core. (This Memorial Resolution was prepared by a special committee consisting of Professors Charles W.Craven (Chair), Karl K. Klein, and Kenneth W. Tyson. Distributed to Voting and Emeritus Members of the faculty of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, the Dean of the College of Education, the Executive Vice President and Provost, and the President on August 31, 1995.)"
