Vlasta (V.A.) Bowling, a longtime resident of Austin and an avid UT football fan, passed away February 1, 2008 in Houston, Texas. She would have attained 93 years of age on March 10th. V.A. moved to Houston in 2006 to be closer to her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Joe C. Bowling; her brother, Amos Riha; and her sister, Libby Riha Gideon, all of the Austin area. V.A. is survived by her beloved daughter Barbara Mueller; her grand-daughters Kim Strickler and Kelli Hernandez of Houston and Kate May of Round Rock. She was blessed with five precious great-grandchildren: Matthew and Joshua Hernandez, and Lindsey, Cline and Colton Strickler; and many nieces and nephews. V.A. was born in Fayetteville, Texas and grew up in Taylor, Texas where she graduated from Taylor High School and went on to attend the University of Texas. Her career included positions with the US Employment Office in the Valley, the Texas Employment Commission in Dallas and Austin, the Texas legislature, the Internal Revenue Service, the UT Chemistry Department, the Texas Education Agency and Austin ISD. First and foremost, she was always a loving and dedicated mother. In Austin, V.A. was a member of First United Methodist Church where she and her husband participated in several classes and activities. She was a member of the UT Ladies Club, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Town Lake Garden Club, a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Creedmoor 607, and the Retired Faculty and Staff Association at UT. She served as a volunteer at St. David's hospital for 28 years. After family, V.A. dearly loved her many friends in the Austin area, all of whom she deeply missed after her move to Houston although she had many new friends at the Buckingham where she resided. "Sunshine", as she came to be known in recent years, was always ready to "party" and loved to travel, visiting many places in the US and around the world. She loved flowers and had a very green thumb in the garden. Butterflies and humming birds were her special friends. Last, but certainly not least in her life, were those Texas Longhorn football games---may the eyes of Texas always be upon her. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 in the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel with The Rev. Barney Provost presiding. Interment will follow Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ree Gonzales, Adrian Hernandez, Darin Ratisseau, Frank Riha, Steven Simmons and David Strickler. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, the Retired Faculty and Staff Association, UT Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.
