Mr. David Augustus Wims, 89 of Paris, died at his home on July 12, 2013. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 16 2:00pm in Wood Funeral Homes, Deport with Mr. Thomas Ridge Officiating Burial will follow in Talco Cemetery The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-7pm He was born in Estelline, Texas on March 10, 1924, the son of Wilkins Augustus and Mamie Carroll Wims. His wife, Marguerite Derryberry, who he married on October 31, 1942, preceded him in death on February 28, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and brothers and sisters, Carl W. Wims, B.L. Wims, John Wims, Richard H. Wims, Nannie Sue Smithee, and Zelma Zoe Wims. Prior to joining the Marines, he worked at Camp Maxey in 1942 and the CCC Camp in 1941-42 in Colorado. Mr. Wims was retired from the US Marine Corp after 23 years of service having joined in June of 1943 While serving, he was a recruiter for the Paris, Breckenridge and Abilene offices. He also had combat tours in Pearl Harbor and Okinawha, Japan. AFter retirement, he was the Head Jailer for the Anaheim, California Police Department for a time; was very active in the Lamar County Republican Party and was a Past Post Commander of Lamar County VFW Post#3990, having joined the VFW in 1954. He loved volunteering at the VA Hospital and believed everyone deserved a second chance. Survivors include his son, David Wims Jr. of Paris; daughters, Pat Butler and Catherine Wims, both of Paris; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
