Bio

COWLING Marcita ‘Cita' Armistead Cowling, 100, a resident of Baldwin County for 72 years, died Friday, June 20, 2008. The youngest of seven children, she was born Feb. 13, 1908 in Clarke County. In 1925, she graduated from Demopolis High School and on Nov. 26, 1926 she married Alex Everett Cowling. Her husband was a veteran of both World War I and World War II, and prior to retiring from the Navy, they had lived in Los Angeles and San Diego, Paris Island, S.C., Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Mobile and Pensacola. They built a home in Seminole in 1935 and lived there many years after retirement. In 1956, they moved to the Rosinton community to be near their son and his family. She moved to the Robertsdale Anderson Court Apartments in 1979 and lived there until she moved to the Robertsdale Health Care Center in 2001. She was employed at Brookley Field for several years, worked at the OPA office in Robertsdale, and was a bookkeeper for Hinote & Starr Packing Company for 25 years. She was an active member of the Robertsdale United Methodist Church and was financial secretary for many years. She was an accomplished gardener, loved decorating with flowers and designed and made beautiful quilts. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, embroidery, ceramics and loved to play bridge with her bridge club. She and her husband fished on the beaches of Gulf Shores and always enjoyed spending time at their beach home. An avid sports fan, she loved football and baseball and was an ardent fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Chicago Cubs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Betty and Bryant James Armistead, all of her brothers and sisters, and her husband, Alex Everett Cowling. Survivors include a son, William Bryant (Faye) Cowling; one granddaughter, Kathleen Cowling Shumate; one grandson, William Bryant (Denise) Cowling Jr.; all of Robertsdale; great-grandchildren, the Rev. M.C. "Mikah" (Melissa) Hudson Jr. of Birmingham; Charity Elizabeth Shumate (Jacob) Jones of Calera, Miranda Hope Cowling (Troy) Moore, Lyndsey Marie Cowling and Brylyn Hayley Cowling, all of Robertsdale; great-great-grandchildren, Maggie Caroline and Macie-Claire Moore, and Emmalynne Cumi Hudson; several nieces and nephews throughout Alabama. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with funeral services at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 at the Robertsdale United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Hail Memorial Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be made to the Robertsdale United Methodist Church Capital Improvement Fund. Arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Robertsdale.
