Bio

Fritz Poppe arrived in Galveston, Texas aboard the Bark Fortuna (Master G. Freytag) on December 11, 1868. His port of embarkation was Bremen, Germany and his country of orgin is listed as Hanover. He was 19 years of age and his occupation is noted as farmer. A search of the ship's passenger list shows no other Poppes aboard and only a couple of others from Hanover. On April 8, 1874, Fritz married Elisebeth Kuch in Colorado Co., Texas. To this union were born nine children: Mary b. 1875, Emma Emily b. ?, Sophie b. abt. 1876, Henry C. b. 1878, Elizabeth b. 1880, Minnie b. 1883, Alma E. b. 1885, Helen Henrietta b. 1887, and Helmut b. 1893. Obituary: Weimar Mercury September 14, 1901 Poppe, Fritz Mr. Fritz Poppe, a well known, industrious and popular farmer of the Oakland New Bielau section, died last Saturday and was buried the following Sunday afternoon at the New Bielau cemetery, the Lutheran minister at that point officiating at the grave. A large crowd of sympathizing friends of the family attended the burial. Our sincere sympathy is extended the bereaved ones in their loss.
