William "Bill" Svoboda of Pasadena died at 11:36 a.m. Friday, July 25, 1975 in the Bayshore Hospital in Pasadena, at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 19 days. The body lay in state at the Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner, until 1 p.m. Sunday, July 27, when it was taken to the Shiner Catholic Church, where the Holy Mass was offered at 2:00 p.m. by the Rev. John Kohnke. The rosary was recited at the Buffington Chapel at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, led by Father Kohnke. Burial was in the Shiner Catholic Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by members of the Shiner American Legion Post. Serving as pallbearers were James Svoboda, Morris Novak, J. D. Doudoin, Jerry Dusek, Clifton Botts and Ronnie Dreyer. Color guards and color bearers were O. S. T. Meyer, Adolph Pesek, Jim and Louis Dusek. Chaplain George Watzlavick read the committal rites. Eddie Jaks folded the flag which was presented to the widow of the deceased by the chaplain. The sounding of "Taps" prerecorded by Leonard Darilek concluded the rites. Mr. Svoboda served with the 141st Infantry during World War II. He entered the service January 21, 1942 at Houston and was honorably discharged April 24, 1944 at McCloskey General Hospital in Temple. He participated in campaigns in the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre arriving in Algeria and on to Italy where he was wounded in action September 9, 1943 during the invasion. He was awarded the African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal, American Defense Service Ribbon, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was born August 6, 1911 at Shiner, Lavaca County, Texas, son of Anton and Agnes (Ennis) Svoboda. He was reared on the farm near Shiner and attended school here. He was a resident of Pasadena for many years and was employed by the American Can Co. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Telita Svoboda of Pasadena; five brothers, Jim , Jerry and Victor Svoboda, all of Pasadena, Anton Svoboda of San Antonio, Wesley Svoboda of Fort Worth; three sisters, Mrs. H. L. (Agnes) Boening of Fort Worth, Mrs. J. W. (Emily) Beaty of Grand Prairie, Mrs. Ed F. (Marie) Pilzner of Yoakum. He was preceded in death by his father, October 12, 1951 and his mother, March 21, 1975; and an infant sister. Shiner Gazette, Shiner, Texas - Thursday, July 31, 1975
