OBITUARY FROM THE SHINER GAZETTE, Shiner, Texas, Thursday, January 27, 1949 Funeral Rites For John Marek Sr. Held Here Monday Following an illness extending over a period of three weeks when he suffered a stroke, John Marek, Sr., passed away at the local hospital Friday, Jan. 21 at 12:15 p.m. having been a hospital patient about five days. Mr. Marek was born May 12, 1861 in Czechoslovakia. He was married there to Amalie Hanzelka, Nov. 11, 1890. They came to America, March 19, 1892, and located in this community. Mrs. Marek passed away Feb. 25, 1948. The family continuously resided in this vicinity. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Marek, one son, Joseph, died March 14, 1936. Survivors include four daughters, three sons: Mrs. Chas. (Rosie) Jansky, Louise; Mrs. C. (Martha) Veit, Mrs. Fr. (Ludmilla) Janik; Miss Theresa Marek, Frank and Henry Marek, Shiner; John Marek Jr., Campellton. Nineteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Chalupa, Czechoslovakia, also survive. Mr. Marek was a devout member of the Catholic Church, also a member of the K. J. T. Society. At the time of his passing deceased had reached the advanced age of 87 years, 8 months and 9 days. Impressive funeral services were held from the family residence Monday, January 24, at 8:30 a.m. thence to Shiner Catholic Church for Solemn Requiem High Mass with the Rev. J. J. Hanacek, celebrant, the Rev. Edw. Jansky, Hostyn, Deacon; the Rev. R. C. Hoffmann, subdeacon. Rosary was recited Sunday, at 7:30 p.m. Interment was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were his grandsons Frank Janik Jr., Fred and Edwin Marek, Robert Veit, Joe and Charlie Jansky. Burial was in Shiner Catholic Cemetery under the auspices of Buffington Funeral Home, Shiner. Mr. Marek lived a long span of life and during that time he gathered about him a large number of friends who gathered Monday to attend his burial rites and follow his remains to their last resting place. A revered father has followed his beloved companion to heavenly rest. We extend sincere sympathy to the bereaved.
