Sylvia Marie Senkbile, 88, of Central City died Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Long Term Care in Central City. Sylvia was born on June 23, 1921, near Chapman to Joseph Frank and Mary (Nabity) Zmek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Senkbile. Survivors are: her children, Dee Senkbile of Grand Island, Greg and Karen Senkbile, Dell and Sheryl Senkbile and Doug and Deb Senkbile, all of Central City; grandchildren, Jeremy and Michele Senkbile, Jamie Senkbile, Chris and Amy Senkbile, Mary Elisabeth and Brandon Hesselrode, Zachary Senkbile and Amanda Senkbile; and great grandchildren, Cohen and Sloan Senkbile, Charlotte Hesselrode and Evangeline Senkbile. She grew up in the Chapman area and attended District 29 School through the eighth grade. She then moved to Dwight to live with her sister and graduated from the Catholic High School in Dwight in 1939. After completing high school, Sylvia taught rural school and received her teaching certificate through Nebraska Central College in Central City. During World War II, she taught in Albion and Chapman. On April 9, 1950, Sylvia Zmek and Donald J. Senkbile were united in marriage. They made their home in the Central City area where they farmed and Sylvia continued teaching. She taught for 17 years in rural Merrick County Schools and at North Ward Elementary and South Ward Elementary Schools in Central City. Sylvia and Don retired in 1997 and moved to San Antonio, Texas. Don died on July 20, 2004; and Sylvia returned to live at Merrick Manor in Central City after his death. In April, 2010, she became a resident of The Long Term Care in Central City. Sylvia was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City. She belonged to a Merrick County Extension Club and to various card clubs. She enjoyed crocheting, flowers, gardening; but her special love was for her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James, Joe, Matthew and Lewis Zmek; and sisters, Agnes Tuma, Christina Helzer and Ann Reha.
