Bio

Alfred Albert Heinrich Brune son of Edward and Emilie Florentine Brune. Alfred,a bachelor, farmed all his life.He made his home on the Freis place and helped Richard and Lillie Freis with their farming. Alfred was a combat veteran of World War II.He was in the Army from February 7,1941 until June 25,1945,most of the time attached to the 45th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. He was awarded the EAME campaign medal with three bronze stars, and saw combat action as a tank crewman in Africa,Tunisia,Naples,Foggia,Rome,Arno and other places. Mr.Brune passed away in Youens Hospital, about 30 hours after wounding himself with a shot from a .22 rifle. Alfred was barely alive when his brother,Eddie Brune, and brother-in-law,Richard Fries, found him at about 10:00 a.m. Saturday in a pasture on the Freis farm at Osage. He never fully regained consciousness. The .22 slug entered the center of his forehead and lodged in the right side of his head. Eddie Brune and his wife, who live in Killeen, had just arrived for a visit. Chief Deputy Sheriff M.H. Buller investigated the shooting and as to the question of suicide marked his report "unknown".The family is convinced it was accidental.Richard Freis said Alfred had taken the rifle along to hunt squirrels, and that apparently he stumbled after getting out of his car on some rocky ground near two large oak trees. Funeral services were held for Alfred Albert Heinrich Brune,52,Tuesday morning July 18,1961 at the Hubbard Funeral Home with the Rev.Wolf of Columbus officiating. Pallbearers were Charles Hattermann Jr.,Melvin Hattermann,Glenn Hoegemeyer,Marvin Ulbricht,Max E. Brune and Laverne Brune.
