Bio
Peter was married three times. 1st - Peter's first wife was Gertrude Heinrichs. They married in 1835 in Prussia. Their children: Christian "Chris" M. Winterscheid, & Mathias Winterscheid. Gertrude died in Prussia. 2nd - Peter married Christina Kessenich in 1843 in Prussia. They had one son, Henry Winterscheidt. Christina also died in Prussia. 3rd - He married Elizabeth Lehn in 1845 in Lesseuich, Prussia. Their children: Margaretta, Helena (Lena), Severin (killed in the Civil War), Christina, Jacob, Joseph, and Peter. They adopted 2 girls, Mary Anna & Elizabeth Mueller. Peter, his wife Elizabeth and their five chldren arrived in New Orleans May 3, 1852. They had departed from Antwerp, Belguim on the Ship Uncas. The Winterscheidt Declaration of Intent, Putam County, Illinois gives the date of May 1st, 1851. The family lived for awhile in Putnam County, Illinois. They then moved west to Kansas in 1870, shipping their horses and farming equipment. Eventually Peter bought a quarter section of land one mile east of Mercier, Kansas. He paid $10 an acre.
